Gee's Bend
The creation of the Gee’s Bend quilts began with African-American female slaves living in an isolated hamlet of Alabama who pieced together strips of used clothing and other remnants of fabric to make quilts to keep their families warm. Living in deplorable conditions and suffering the abuse of slavery, these women managed to find beauty and creativity in their quilts which were improvisational and geometrically simple. The unique designs are considered one of the most important contributions to the history of art in the United States. The tradition continues today by the ancestors of those slave women.
This series is a tribute to the courage and bravery of these women. In the Gee’s Bend tradition, these twelve works were made using only the fabric discarded during the creation of the REMNANTS collection.
